Qwest Communications is upping its bid for U S West and Frontier Communications, but CWA is working to make certain that communities, consumers and shareholders recognize that the takeover would undermine phone service, slash jobs and hurt shareholder investment.

Contracts covering 5,000 Sprint Corp. workers expire this year and, so far, it's been tough bargaining for members of CWA Local 3672 in Hickory and Madison, N.C.

Jobs with Justice and Workers' Rights Boards in Seattle and Cleveland highlighted the struggles of workers to obtain CWA representation, in conjunction with the AFL-CIO's "7 Days in June" campaign.

Bargaining on behalf of CWA's 34,000 New Jersey state workers continued at a frenetic pace as the CWA News went to press - with hopes of averting a strike - counting down to a June 30 contract expiration.

In a big victory for passenger service employees and CWA, the National Mediation Board has called for an expedited election at US Airways.

The NMB will mail ballots to some 9,000 employees beginning July 16, with the vote to be counted Aug. 20.
