CWA, US Airways Meet Over Merger
CWA members at US Airways will have full guaranteed seniority protections — for both part-time and full-time workers — if the announced sale of their airline to United Airline goes forward.
In a meeting with US Airways management, CWA reminded the company that its contract includes the seniority safeguards as a prior condition of merger or sale, and called on United to supply this written confirmation as required by the contract.
CWA, which represents more than 10,000 passenger service employees at US Airways, is working with members to make certain that their concerns are heard, although the union hasn’t yet taken a position to oppose or support the merger.
The U.S. Departments of Justice and Transportation have jurisdiction over the merger. Several congressional committees have held oversight hearings on the impact the merger would have on service, especially to smaller communities, and on competition.
United is the nation’s largest carrier; US Airways is the predominant East Coast airline.
