CWA Resource Hub on Artificial Intelligence

Below You’ll Find:

AI Bargaining Toolkit

The CWA National AI Committee has developed resources to assist CWA local leaders, members and staff in bargaining over Artificial Intelligence in their workplace.

Factsheet: Identifying and Addressing Workplace AI (pdf)

This is an introductory factsheet that defines AI, explains how employers use AI, and provides suggested steps for CWA staff and local leaders to address it in their workplace.

Resource: Template Request for Information on AI (docx)

This template provides a menu of sample questions intended to inform bargaining on the use of Artificial Intelligence tools and systems that impact the terms and conditions of work for bargaining unit members. These questions are written to be generally and broadly applicable across industries and workplaces. Questions should be edited or adapted to apply to your workplace and the specifics of your negotiations.

Factsheet: Using Your CBA Language to Fight Back Against New Technologies (pdf)

This factsheet helps you assess whether your current CBA language can be interpreted to protect members against AI and block abusive workplace AI or demand bargaining. This factsheet provides advice and guidance on using CWA language you already have to address new digital technologies including AI.

Issue Brief: CWA Contract Language on AI (pdf)

This document reviews current CWA language on AI, providing categories of protections and excerpts of CWA contracts that can be adapted and used for bargaining.

Case Study: Ziff Davis Creators Guild 2024 AI Bargaining Campaign (pdf)

This case study explores a successful bargaining campaign by journalists in the Ziff Davis Creators Guild against management misuses of artificial intelligence.

AI Policy Advocacy and Coalition Building Resources

Below are resources developed by the CWA National AI Committee to assist CWA leaders, members and staff in advocacy supporting pro-worker public policy on artificial intelligence issues.

Guide: Lobbying your Elected Officials on AI (docx)

This guide to lobbying your elected officials to advance pro-worker AI policy includes a template letter to elected officials. The letter provides an overview of CWA’s concerns about the misuses of AI by employers and the principles for pro-worker legislation in this area. It can be used to open dialogue with a potential sponsor for pro-worker legislation or to educate about the harms of industry-led bills.

Factsheet: Model Legislation on AI in the Workplace (pdf)

This factsheet summarizes CWA’s recommendations for legislation protecting workers from abusive use of digital technology, provides examples of good bills and bad bills, and offers resources for more information on AI-related policy.

Resource: Pro-worker AI Advocacy Organizations

CWA compiled a list of ally organizations that study AI impacts and advocate for workers and the public interest. You can reach out to these organizations directly or contact the CWA Research Department for assistance with outreach.

Studies of Artificial Intelligence at CWA Workplaces

Factsheet: How Artificial Intelligence is Impacting CWA Customer Service Professionals (pdf)

This factsheet highlights key findings from a survey of CWA-represented call center employees on the impact of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the workplace undertaken in partnership with Cornell and McMaster University. AI tools are increasingly used in call center settings for a variety of purposes. Our survey finds that many AI tools are associated with more stress, less job satisfaction and a more intense work environment while some AI tools can improve job quality by complementing and enhancing the skills of call center agents. Workers’ voices are critical to ensure that new AI tools complement and improve call center jobs. View the full 2023 Call Center Artificial Intelligence report from Cornell and McMaster University (pdf).

Report: NewsGuild AI Member Survey Report (pdf)

The NewsGuild published a report based on a survey of its members about AI use in newsrooms that found a majority do not trust employers to ethically implement artificial intelligence and they want to fight to make sure we do not lose jobs to automation.
