Imagine an employer holding you responsible for institutionalizing its developmentally disabled clients because you chose to vote for a union. That's the guilt trip organizers say was laid on 72 direct care workers employed in group homes run by St. John's Community Services.

Two new CWA Executive Board members were sworn in by President Bahr on Jan. 9 at the board's meeting in Palm Springs, Calif.

CWA's Executive Board called on union leaders and activists at all levels to keep up the momentum from the 2004 political mobilization. In a resolution, the board warned against letting grassroots political structures atrophy in the face of the "looming fight against the privatization of Social Security, the fight for good jobs, universal access to affordable health care, and the all-important fight to protect the freedom of workers to freely join a union…."

CWA defeated the Fraternal Order of Police, 54-51, on Jan. 19, as 104 deputies and sergeants in the Dona Ana County, N.M., Sheriff's Department chose the union that would represent their bargaining unit of 110.

Cingular Wireless reached an agreement with the Labor Department to pay $5.1 million in back pay to more than 25,000 customer service workers at 25 call centers.
