Website Lets Members Sound Off on Health Care

A new CWA website gives members and their families the chance to speak out about the health care crisis and tell Congress, policy makers, the media and others how the nation's health care system is failing.

The site, www.healthcarevoices.org, also offers the latest news and analysis on the state of health care, with reports from the National Coalition on Health Care, Families USA, and other organizations.

"CWA is encouraging working families to share their experiences—the hardships they face and the choices they must make to keep health care coverage. Working families deserve a real solution to this crisis, not empty promises and greater cost- shifting," CWA President Morton Bahr said.

Members are already participating in the online forum. Catherine B., a CWA member in Georgia, writes that she walked the picket line with her husband during a recent Lockheed Martin strike because health care is so critical a concern. One retiree "pays Lockheed $935 a month, his entire retirement check, for health insurance. He uses his Social Security to pay for gas, electricity, phone, property taxes," she said, adding that at age 70 he works at a local grocery store to afford to eat.

Rodney O., a member from Missouri notes that in every round of bargaining his health care benefits are under attack while "my CEO continues to get stock options and other bonuses."

CWA has endorsed five key principles for national health care reform: universal coverage, comprehensive benefits, affordability, fair financing, and quality care delivery, and is working toward those goals through bargaining, legislation and community action.

"Our country's health care crisis can't be fixed solely at the bargaining table," said CWA Executive Vice President Larry Cohen. "Our elected officials must face up to the crisis. CWA will continue to work with coalition partners, including some of our employers, to push for just such a solution. CWA remains committed to the goal of maintaining quality, affordable health care for our members."
