An eight-week strike that all but shut down the Victoria Times-Colonist in British Columbia has been settled, but striking members of The Newspaper Guild-CWA at two Ontario papers and locked-out workers at another were maintaining picket lines as the CWA News went to press.

CWA has called on Sprint Corp. to put its public praise for local telephone company employees into action at the bargaining table, where workers in several units continue to fight for fair contracts.

CWA members in New York state concluded a 3-week strike against Butler Fleet Services on Sept. 21, with the company agreeing to a retroactive pay raise of 3 percent for a full year and 4 percent to the end of 2002.

After six months of heated negotiations, two byline strikes and informational picketing, members of The Newspaper Guild-CWA at the Washington Post ratified a new contract Nov. 7 with modest wage increases.

Ending a long battle with a union-busting attorney and an employer who called workers “family” while treating them like the enemy, members of The Newspaper Guild-CWA at The Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore., voted in October to accept the company’s final contract offer.
