Bell Atlantic Strike Helps Win Settlements for GTE/Verizon Workers

Strike threats by units of former GTE workers at Verizon in Kentucky and Indiana have prompted contract settlements with the Communications Workers of America, and progress is also reported in bargaining at another GTE/Verizon company in western North Carolina.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Negotiations today have focused on major CWA job security issues where serious differences have slowed the overall progress of talks. Meanwhile 87,000 workers remain on strike - 72,000 represented by CWA and another 15,000 by the IBEW.
