CWA members on the job are in the thick of Hurricane Katrina's aftermath, working in conditions that some journalists are likening to war zones.

CWA members are giving generously while union leaders assess the shattering toll on CWA families.

Moved by the devastation to the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, delegates to the CWA annual convention voted to send up to $4 million in aid from the union's Members' Relief Fund to help CWA families in the region recover.

In his first speech as president of CWA, Larry Cohen issued a challenge to the union's 1,000 employers in the United States and Canada to work with union members to "define what leadership really means."

An historic transition of power marked the opening day of CWA's 67th annual convention as delegates gave a rousing send-off to 20-year President Morton Bahr in the morning and elected a new president, CWA Executive Vice President Larry Cohen.
