Workplace activity by hundreds of CWA supporters in the Connecticut Union of Telephone Workers has produced one of the largest private sector affiliation vote victories anywhere in the country this year.

It took a monumental grassroots mobilization backed up by a paid media campaign, but in the end it was the plain truth that torpedoed Prop 226 in California.

The Suburban Writers and Photographers of the Philadelphia Inquirer, a unit of TNG-CWA Local 10, has ratified its first contract, four years in the making, by an overwhelming vote of 78-12.

The Canadian Media Guild, TNG-CWA Local 213, will gain 750 new members this month in a merger with the Canadian Broadcast Employees Union. Membership of both unions at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ratified the merger agreement by a vote of better than 91 percent.

Widespread mobilization by CWA local officers and members punctuated the start of formal negotiations with two major employers - BellSouth and U S West - on June 22.
