The Suburban Writers and Photographers of the Philadelphia Inquirer, a unit of TNG-CWA Local 10, has ratified its first contract, four years in the making, by an overwhelming vote of 78-12.

The Canadian Media Guild, TNG-CWA Local 213, will gain 750 new members this month in a merger with the Canadian Broadcast Employees Union. Membership of both unions at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ratified the merger agreement by a vote of better than 91 percent.

Widespread mobilization by CWA local officers and members punctuated the start of formal negotiations with two major employers - BellSouth and U S West - on June 22.

CWA members at Ameritech are voting on a proposed new settlement reached more than two months before expiration of the current agreement.

A strike against Lucent Technologies - the shortest in CWA history - ended with a tentative five-year agreement on June 1 covering 26,000 CWA members and some 18,000 members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
