From the very first minutes of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, CWA members have been on the front lines, working to keep open the nation’s lines of communication, then rebuilding a system devastated by fire, flooding and debris.

More than the suffocating ash, more than the utter devastation of the scene, what Margaret Brahan remembers most about the day she spent as a Salvation Army volunteer in lower Manhattan were the “thank yous.”

The devastating terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon, near Washington, D.C., touched the CWA family directly, with the loss of at least six active members and three retirees. Countless members lost relatives, friends or acquaintances in the events of Sept.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, after investigating complaints filed by CWA, has issued a “serious” citation against the New Era Cap Co. in Derby, N.Y., where workers have been on strike since July 16 over wages and health issues.

CWA, which represents passenger service employees at US Airways, won assurances that the airline will honor its contract covering some 10,600 agents and will pay furlough assistance to workers laid off in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.
