NABET-CWA Reaches Pact for 2,500 at NBC

NEW YORK, Jan. 28 - A new tentative 3-year agreement was reached today with NBC on behalf of 2,500 employees represented by the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians, affiliated with the Communications Workers of America, the union announced.

The package calls for wage increases of at least 9 percent ranging to as much as 12 percent for most of the employees over the contract term, along with other improvements.

The settlement was reached more than two months early - the present pact expires March 31st - which was in marked contrast with the last few rounds of bargaining with NBC, according to NABET-CWA President John S. Clark.

He said: "This agreement was reached without the rancor and bad feelings that permeated the last several negotiations. Our committee believes it is the best agreement we could reach in 1999 and I concur."

General wage hikes of 3 percent will go into effect each April 1st. In addition, some 450 employees already received a 3 percent increase last October, and approximately 1,800 engineering workers will receive another 3 percent on February 27, 1999.

Among other contract gains were the addition of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as an 11th holiday and a "seniority pay system" that will increase pay for daily hires based on days worked. The union agreed to additional flexibility in certain areas including utilization of daily hires.

"All in all, we believe this is a balanced and fair proposal," said Clark, noting that it is being unanimously recommended for ratification by the Network Negotiating Committee. Ratification ballots will be counted on March 5.

Clark credited the work of NABET-CWA Network Coordinator John Krieger, Lou Fallot, president of Local 11, New York City; Michael Queen, Local 31, Washington, D.C.; Ray Taylor and Ed Dabrowski, Local 41, Chicago, and Len Duge, Local 53, Burbank, Calif.
