Job Training Alliance Helps Workers Close Skills Gap

Members of the Communications Workers of America, graduates of a joint training program operated by AT&T and CWA, met with President Clinton today as he outlined new proposals to expand job and skill training opportunities for workers.

The President met with CWA members George Duncan, Marvin Dawkins and Yvette Shearin, and another AT&T employee, Denise Proux, at an AT&T facility in Oakton, Va. The four are among the thousands of AT&T and Lucent Technologies employees who have benefited from the Alliance for Employee Growth and Development, a very successful joint training trust that includes CWA, AT&T, the Electrical Workers and Lucent Technologies.

Among those meeting with the President were CWA vice presidents Jim Irvine, Communications and Technologies, and Pete Catucci, District 2, along with members of the Alliance committee.

The Alliance, first established in 1986, offers workers skill and classroom training through a network of colleges and universities, other education programs and distance and Internet based learning. Courses range from basic and remedial skills to computer applications to college degree programs. More than 23,000 employees participate in training each year.

The Alliance has been recognized as a "best practice" program by the U.S. Department of Labor and other government, corporate and education organizations. Most recently, it was cited by Vice President Gore in his summit on 21st Century Skills for 21st Century Jobs as a model in promoting lifelong learning and preparing workers for the jobs of the future.

President Clinton has proposed increased funds for adult education and literacy programs, retraining and programs that increase youth employment, and his program is intended to ensure that every displaced worker who needs training will receive it. CWA President Morton Bahr, who headed the president's Commission for a Nation of Lifelong Learners, has stressed the need for the kind of continuous learning that brings "employment" security, as workers master the skills needed for the jobs of the future.
