AFL-CIO President John Sweeney has proposed a CWA-supported plan to allow locals of the recently disaffiliated unions to continue to participate in state AFL-CIO federations and central labor councils.

On August 11, 390 Cingular Wireless call center workers in Memphis, Tenn., gained CWA representation following a card check. More than 74 percent of the former AT&T Wireless workers signed cards supporting union representation.

The FCC approved the deal only after gaining a CWA-initiated commitment that there would be an equitable distribution of debt and assets from the Sprint local telephone operations resulting from the spin-off.
