As a U.S. House vote loomed on “fast track” trade legislation, union mem- bers stepped up their fight for fair trade pacts that take workers’ rights as seriously as they take the demands of multinational corporations.

Ralph Maly, elected by acclamation at the convention to head Communications and Technologies, pledges to uphold the union’s constitution as a CWA vice president. Maly was appointed by the CWA executive board earlier this year to succeed longtime C&T Vice Pres. Jim Irvine, who retired.

The man who opened fire in a gay bar in Roanoke, Va., last September, killing CWA member Danny Overstreet and wounding six others, has been sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison.

Honoring CWA’s top local newsletters, CWA Pres. Morton Bahr presented first place General Excellence Awards to locals in four categories determined by size of circulation, and the Oscar Jager Journalism Award for overall journalistic excellence and commitment.

American Eagle airline agents have the chance to vote this month for CWA representation in an election set by the National Mediation Board.

A majority of the 3,200 passenger services agents petitioned the NMB for an election. Ballots will be mailed Aug. 10 and counted Sept 12.
