Even as the state of New Jersey started spewing out layoff notices like pieces of confetti on Sept. 21, CWA members and local officers were fighting back with a mock New Orleans-style funeral to protest the death of state-run auto inspections.

NABET-CWA negotiators this month are continuing to search for contracts with two of the nation’s top television networks — Disney/ABC and NBC.

In the first year of its "$2 Million by 2000" program, CWA members contributed $1,575,047, CWA Sec.-Treas. Barbara Easterling reported, and increased their contributions over 1996 levels by $185,652.

Delegates to the CWA convention elected Larry Cohen as executive vice president. Cohen, who has served as CWA organizing director and assistant to the president, won election over CWA District 7 Vice President Sue Pisha. He succeeds M.E.

A beloved executive vice president of CWA gave his final report at the 1998 convention, but left the stage with a resounding reassurance he will always be welcomed back. The delegates unanimously voted to bestow upon M.E. Nichols the title Executive Vice President Emeritus.
