Appalled union leaders and politicians responded swiftly to a top Bush administration economic adviser's comments praising the outsourcing of American jobs overseas as good trade policy.

Bargaining kicked off Feb. 12 in Pleasanton, Calif., for a new contract covering 32,000 workers at SBC West, formerly Pacific Bell. The current contract expires April 1.

In a joint letter to members of Congress advising that Comcast's proposed takeover of the Walt Disney Co. is a bad idea, CWA and IBEW cited "Comcast's horrendous record of abusing employees, gouging customers and bullying communities where it operates."

Members of NABET-CWA Local 54047 voted to accept the local NBC affiliate's much-improved contract offer, thus ending a thirteen day lock-out.
