When the union’s one and only executive vice president trades in his suit and tie for a pair of Levis late this summer, he’s planning to spend time on a range of personal pursuits that have been shunted aside by more than a half century of union work.

Fired up by rock music and labor songs of solidarity, hundreds of CWA members and their friends from a dozen unions marched, chanted and demonstrated outside the Washington Post during a noontime rally Feb. 13 on behalf of mail room employees at the newspaper.

CWA has established a special members-only site on the World Wide Web to provide bargaining information for members covered by major negotiations this year.

CWA and SBC Corp. agreed to open early contract negotiations covering 43,000 members at Southwestern Bell and 35,000 at Pacific Telesis beginning on March 9 with an accelerated timetable for completion. The current agreements expire on August 8 and normally bargaining would have begun in June.
