Delegates to the CWA convention elected Larry Cohen as executive vice president. Cohen, who has served as CWA organizing director and assistant to the president, won election over CWA District 7 Vice President Sue Pisha. He succeeds M.E.

A beloved executive vice president of CWA gave his final report at the 1998 convention, but left the stage with a resounding reassurance he will always be welcomed back. The delegates unanimously voted to bestow upon M.E. Nichols the title Executive Vice President Emeritus.

CWA won representation rights for more than 25,000 working men and women across the United States and Canada during the last year, CWA President Morton Bahr told delegates, alternates and guests attending the union’s 60th annual convention in Chicago.
Violence at Home and at Work, a Union Issue

Delegates to CWA’s 60th convention were shocked by statistics and graphic images demonstrating that violence against women in the home is a serious national and international problem. CWA Sec.-Treas. Barbara Easterling, for one, stressed that, "Domestic Violence is a Workplace Issue."

CWA marked its 60th anniversary by returning for this year’s convention to Chicago, where the union’s founding President, Joseph A. Beirne, made the motion on June 15, 1938, "that a national union be formed."
