Beverly Earle picked up her local newspaper recently and was, momentarily, appalled to see that a business group had given her a low rating among politicians.

Calling it a “working person’s AOL,” CWA and other AFL-CIO unions have unveiled a new Internet community designed for union families.

The AFL-CIO, at its policy meeting in New Orleans, announced a campaign to build solidarity among working families from Maine to Malaysia and to hold multinational corporations accountable for irresponsible behavior in their global operations.

Four days after meeting President Bill Clinton at the White House, Yvonne Wheeler’s voice was still filled with excitement — and a hint of disbelief.

“It was so motivating and encouraging,” Wheeler said. “I thought, ‘My God, what am I doing here?”

Outpatients put a lot of trust in drivers who transport them to and from doctors’ appointments. They expect to ride in vehicles with heat and decent brakes and to know that if a medical emergency arises, the driver can handle it.
