After six months of heated negotiations, two byline strikes and informational picketing, members of The Newspaper Guild-CWA at the Washington Post ratified a new contract Nov. 7 with modest wage increases.

Ending a long battle with a union-busting attorney and an employer who called workers “family” while treating them like the enemy, members of The Newspaper Guild-CWA at The Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore., voted in October to accept the company’s final contract offer.

Newly organized collections workers at BellSouth.net overwhelmingly ratified a three-year first contract Oct. 29, winning significant raises and 100 percent company-paid health care premiums for fulltime employees.

Political clout can make all the difference in an organizing campaign. Just ask Local 7026 President Linda Hatfield, who has been working with school system employees in Tucson, Ariz., in their quest for affiliation with CWA.

By a vote of 374-18, one of the largest unionized groups of public broadcasting employees in the country has become part of CWA.
