Urging the delegates to spur their locals to active participation, CWA Executive Vice President Larry Cohen turned the spotlight on an unprecedented campaign to restore collective bargaining and organizing rights in the United States.

As five of the Democratic candidates for president each made his pitch to CWA members at the Chicago convention, one thing was indisputable: For unions and working families, the difference between the current administration and any one of the Democratic contenders would be night and day.

Delegates passed 13 resolutions, ranging from issues of the economy to foreign trade, health care and equal rights.

Standing together in bargaining, organizing and in their resolve to take back America for working families, more than 2,800 registered delegates and guests cheered CWA national leaders, 2004 presidential candidates and outspoken local leaders at the union's 2003 convention, Aug.

Striking members of Kentucky Locals 3371, Ashland, and 3372, Lexington, were voting on a proposed settlement with ALLTEL as the CWA News went to press.

The three-year contract, with annual wage hikes of 3.5 percent, would end the summer-long strike.
