Statement from CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. on the Death of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee

The entire Communications Workers of America family is saddened by the death of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Congresswoman Jackson Lee never backed down from a fight on behalf of working people, and her track record of accomplishment in Congress includes legislation that has uplifted countless American families.

Personally, I am heartbroken by this loss. As a native Houstonian, I was a constituent of Shelia’s. During my time as President of CWA Local 6222, we developed a close working relationship and a friendship that I cherished. Not only did Shelia advocate in Congress for members of our community who are too often overlooked, she got personally involved, regardless of whether or not a person in need lived in her district.

My love and prayers are with Shelia’s family, including her husband Elwyn, her children Jason and Erica, and her grandchildren Ellison and Roy. We will never forget Congresswoman Jackson Lee’s passion for justice and our democracy, and we will fight on in her name.
