Meow Wolf Workers in Houston Announce Union with Communications Workers of America
(Houston, Texas) – Today, nearly 70 workers at Meow Wolf’s Houston location have announced their intent to form a union with the Communications Workers of America Local 7055, joining hundreds of workers as part of the Meow Wolf Workers Collective (MWWC-CWA). Members of the organizing committee have requested voluntary recognition from Meow Wolf management after an overwhelming majority of eligible staff signed union authorization cards.
“We are so excited and proud to be joining our fellow employees at the other Meow Wolf locations in forming a union. Me and my fellow organizing committee members have been working hard to get to this point, and it’s been a labor of love over the past few months,” said Marleigh Flowers, organizing committee member and bartender at Meow Wolf Houston’s Radio Tave. “We want to have a seat at the table when decisions that impact our day-to-day lives are being made and to be able to voice the concerns and issues that are important to us.”
The Houston unit would include bartenders, servers, cooks, retail, guest services, tech, art and scenic, facilities, events, and security employees at Meow Wolf Houston’s Radio Tave, all of whom contribute to the creation and maintenance of Meow Wolf’s immersive experiences for all ages. If successful, they will become the fifth unit to form a union, joining the organizing momentum of workers across Meow Wolf locations in Santa Fe, N.M.; Denver, Colo.; Las Vegas, Nev.; and Grapevine, Texas.
“We strongly believe that all workers with a right to form a union under the National Labor Relations Act should have easy access to that right,” said Meow Wolf Workers Collective-CWA Local 7055 President Matthew Rosvold. “We ask that Meow Wolf’s executive leadership voluntarily recognize the Houston chapter without delay or obstruction so that they can work together to collaboratively improve the workplace. When we work together, we build worlds.”
Earlier this year, Meow Wolf workers in Las Vegas ratified their first union contract, securing meaningful gains including improved wages, shift bidding processes, holiday leave, just cause protections, and a voluntary separation policy. MWWC-CWA Local 7055 members in Grapevine, Texas, are still bargaining with the company for a fair contract after 11 months of contract negotiations. In response, workers launched a Strike and Defense Fund to help workers cover rent, food, transportation, and potential legal support as they continue to fight for their rights.
“We know the road ahead is tough, but we will not accept a contract shaped by Texas’s anti-worker law and rhetoric,” said Meow Wolf Workers Collective-CWA Local 7055 bargaining committee member Alexis Stewart, who is a Guest Services worker at Meow Wolf Grapevine's The Real Unreal. “We’re excited to welcome our sister site, Radio Tave, into the union, and we will stand together to challenge a status quo that disenfranchises workers across the state.”
Meow Wolf is an immersive arts and entertainment company that was founded as an artist collective. For the workers, their union is a collaborative force that holds Meow Wolf true to its progressive roots as a collective dedicated to making radical art. Together, the workers of the Meow Wolf Workers Collective are working to make Meow Wolf a beacon for working creatives around the world.
“The workers at Meow Wolf’s Radio Tave location in Houston are carrying forward a momentum that has already brought change to Meow Wolf workplaces across the country,” said CWA District 7 Vice President Susie McAllister. “By standing together, they’re ensuring that the company lives up to its founding values and that the people who bring its art to life are treated with the fairness, dignity, and respect they deserve.”
