Education, Telecom and Service Worker Unions Urge Biden to Appoint Rosenworcel Permanent Chair of Federal Communications Commission

Washington, D.C. -- This week, leaders of five prominent labor unions sent a letter to President Joe Biden urging him to appoint Jessica Rosenworcel permanent Chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Biden named Rosenworcel Acting Chair in January.

In the letter, the union presidents note Rosenworcel’s success providing relief to help consumers access broadband during the pandemic and her ability to find common ground with other Commissioners on important policy issues.

“There is much work to do to build back better, to close the digital divide, and our members stand ready to do it,” the letter reads. “But that work will be slowed until the vacant seat at the FCC is filled and Acting Chair Rosenworcel is appointed to permanent chair. Her focus on greater opportunity, accessibility, and affordability in our communications services and her tireless advocacy on behalf of workers, educators, students, families and consumers has never been more important.”

The letter was signed by Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT); Christopher M. Shelton, President of the Communications Workers of America (CWA); Lonnie R. Stephenson, President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW); Becky Pringle, President of the National Education Association (NEA); and Mary Kay Henry, President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
