CWA Statement on the Killing of Renee Nicole Good

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) union released the following statement from CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. in response to the shooting of Minneapolis resident Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent:

Our union grieves the senseless killing of Renee Nicole Good, who was shot by an ICE agent as she exercised her First Amendment rights just blocks from her own home. We condemn this act of violence.

We have a tradition in our union of wearing red every Thursday to honor a very special CWA member, Gerry Horgan, who was killed while exercising his fundamental right to strike and walk a picket line. We wear red, not just to show our solidarity, but to remember the ultimate price that Gerry paid while defending our right to speak out.

Just like Gerry, Renee Nicole Good was killed while exercising her constitutionally protected right to speak out and to stand in solidarity with her community.

When I put on my red shirt this morning, I honor Gerry Horgan, and I honor Renee Nicole Good—and I honor the bravery of every American with the courage to peacefully protest or picket today.

Our hearts are heavy, and our thoughts are with Renee’s family, friends, and everyone affected by this tragedy.
