Workers' Rights Focus Of Dec. 10, Human Rights Day

CWA will help lead labor's campaign to remind the public that "workers' rights are human rights" on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day.

More than 100 activists were on line for an AFL-CIO conference call this week to begin planning Dec. 10 events.

CWA will take the lead on events in New Jersey, Cleveland, San Francisco, Phoenix and other locations. A number of AFL-CIO state and local central bodies, many headed by CWA local officers, are coordinating Dec. 10 activities to focus attention on the daily assault on workers' rights to bargain and organize in the United States. Many are planning activities in conjunction with CWA's Verizon Wireless campaign.

In the works so far: Columbus, Ohio, activists will hold a workers' rights board hearing and will have roving pickets at Verizon Wireless stores; Boston union members will hold a major demonstration, topping the 5,000 person turnout of two years ago; and the Interfaith Worker Justice will coordinate actions with the Verizon Wireless campaign.

American Rights at Work, an organization committed to restoring workplace democracy, points out that so far this year, more than 16,000 American workers have been fired or penalized for supporting a union. ARAW tracks the growing count on its website, www.americanrightsatwork.org, and notes that a worker is fired or discriminated against for supporting a union voice every 23 minutes.

Labor wants to build support for the Employee Free Choice Act by putting a spotlight on the delays, harassment, smear campaigns, captive audience meetings and firings and other illegal tactics that employers - with no fear of consequences - routinely use against union supporters. The measure would let workers choose a union through card check recognition, stiffen penalties for company interference in organizing drives, and call for mediation and binding arbitration in first-contract disputes.

To date, 40 Senators and 201 members of the House of Representatives have endorsed the measure.

CWA's top officers are urging all locals to participate in Dec. 10 actions and to continue to engage and educate members on the need to change labor laws and make the Employee Free Choice Act a reality.

More information on the Dec. 10 activities will be posted at ga.cwa-union.org and www.aflcio.org.
