Workers in Iowa and Oregon Join CWA

More than 50 workers voted for a CWA voice in separate elections recently in District 7. In Coralville, Iowa, 26 dispatchers at the Joint Emergency Communications Center voted 18-0 to join CWA Local 7101. The workers handle 911 calls for both Iowa and Johnson counties. They were assisted by District 7 staff representative Bonnie Winther, local president Scott Rentschler and CWAers Steve Abbott and Carey King.

In Osage, Iowa, 15 nurses at the Mitchell County Hospital voted to affiliate with CWA. They join a unit of 102 Hamilton Hospital patient care workers in Webster City, Iowa, that affiliated with CWA last month as part of the Iowa Staff Nurses Association. Supporting the nurses were Iowa Staff Nurses Association organizer Teri Murphy and CWA staff representative Winther.

In Portland, Oregon, workers at Free Geek, a community service computer center, said "CWA Yes" by a vote of 12-2, said Local 7901 president Madelyn Elder. The workers refurbish computer equipment for use in the community.
