Worker Free Choice is Vital
By Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.)
Exclusive to CWA News
Since my days as a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, I have believed that the right to organize is one of the most important rights that workers have. That is why I am the lead Republican sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 1696).
This important legislation will ensure that American workers continue to have the right to form a union. It requires that the National Labor Relations Board certify a union if a majority of employees signs documents stating they want to form a union. It also provides for the arbitration and mediation of first contract disputes and establishes stronger penalties against employers who violate their employees' rights to organize.
Each year, workers attempt to organize unions to represent their interests. According to a recent survey, more workers than ever say they would join a union if given the chance. Unfortunately, some employers engage in campaigns to deter workers from joining unions. That is why this legislation is vital to make sure their voices are heard. The right of working men and women to join and participate in unions that truly represent their interests must never be infringed.
