VIS Members Keep Up Strike, Contract Fight

CWA members at Verizon Information Services rallied throughout New York this week, building support from their communities and elected officials in their fight for a fair contract. The 300 VIS members from Locals 1105, 1118 and 1122 began an unfair labor practice strike on Oct. 31 as the company resorted to bad faith bargaining.

CWA's unfair labor practice charge filed with the National Labor Relations Board is going forward, reported CWA Representative Pat Telesco. No talks are scheduled at this time.

"Flying squads are very active, and we are following managers as they attempt to do our work," she said. In Albany, four sales representatives tailed a manager as he tried to make a sale at a dentist's office; the workers set up picket lines immediately. In Buffalo, CWA sent flying squadrons to work following managers who were delivering Yellow Pages.

A rally in Albany brought out about 150 people, along with Mayor Gerald D. Jennings and State Assemblyman Paul Tonko (D). Mayor Jennings met with the VIS general manager and pressed him to call Texas and tell them to get workers a fair contract, Local 1118 reported.

Other actions and leafleting took place in Manhattan, Purchase, East Meadow, and other New York locations.
