Verizon West Bargaining Opens in Texas

CWA members from Verizon West locals marked the start of bargaining in Texas on July 7 by wearing solidarity stickers and looking ahead to more mobilization activities.

The contract, covering 3,400 workers at the former GTE Southwest represented by Local 6171, expires Aug. 15. The bargaining team is chaired by CWA Rep. Donna Bentley.

In a commitment to national solidarity, delegates from all Verizon locals attended the Verizon West bargaining council in Dallas. Contracts covering some 15,000 workers at Verizon West expire between now and the end of 2005.

During the session, participants identified priority issues for members in customer service, operator services and outside plant. They also adopted a bargaining resolution that calls for key national proposals to be submitted at every local bargaining table. These include a substantial wage increase, an increase in the VEBA caps, the elimination of outsourcing, no layoffs, access to and training for jobs in new and emerging technologies, such as fiber to the premise, wireless internet and others, and maintaining quality health care.

In a separate mobilization resolution, locals pledged to participate in national actions as well as develop individual mobilization plans.
