Unionists, Lawmakers Rally Against Outsourcing

CWA headquarters staff and members of District 2 locals and other unions turned out for a rally and press briefing on Capitol Hill March 5 in support of Senate Democrats' efforts to combat outsourcing of both manufacturing and white collar call center and high tech jobs.

The rally was organized by Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, who blamed President Bush for recently announced record layoffs and blasted him for the worst record on job creation since Herbert Hoover and his failure to fill the post of "manufacturing czar," an assistant Secretary of Commerce job he announced he was creating on Labor Day.

Stabenow also presented several Auto Workers members who described how they lost their jobs when their employer moved overseas.

Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota conducted a hearing the same day, where witnesses refuted Bush administration claims that shifting American jobs overseas is in the best interest of the American people.

"The administration has repeatedly stated that the economy is on the way to recovery, pointing to consumer confidence and the stock market, but it is ignoring the national and personal tragedies associated with the disappearance of the manufacturing jobs that build the American middle class," said Stabenow, who recently introduced the More Jobs Act and is co-sponsoring legislation to require manufacturers to give three months notice before they lay off workers and outsource their jobs to other countries. The More Jobs Act would use tax credits to foster creation of U.S. manufacturing jobs.
