Two Students to Pursue Degrees as Bahr Scholars; Applications Available

Two students at Empire State College in New York have been named winners of Morton Bahr scholarships for 2003, and the competition for 2004 is underway.

The Morton Bahr Scholarship Program, named for CWA's president, was established three years ago to help union members and their families earn degrees through distance learning at the college.

The recipients are Kia Hardeman, a dancer from Tallahassee, Fla., whose mother, Annie Hardeman, is a member of CWA Local 3204, and Allison Mercado of Deltona, Fla., an AT&T billing clerk and member of CWA Local 3108.

Hardeman has danced since age 2 and has taught dance since age 13, with a particular emphasis on children from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

She is working toward her undergraduate degree in education and business management and intending to earn a master's degree in secondary education. "Currently, I am petitioning for government grants to start a larger community program that reaches out to more children, and I am writing a business proposal to open my own dance school," she said.

Mercado expects to complete her bachelor's degree in business administration this year, and is planning to seek a master's in business or labor relations. "I believe that to continue in a unionized company, it is important to have an understanding of the relationship between union and management. The success of an organization requires both associates and managers to work together to continue learning," she said.

The students have been selected to receive full scholarships covering tuition, fees and an allowance for books. The first 10 Bahr scholars enrolled through Empire State College's Center for Distance Learning in the fall of 2001, with four more added in 2002. The scholarship is renewable each year as long as the recipients make satisfactory progress in their studies.

Applications are now available online at www.esc.edu/bahr. For more information see the website, call the Office of Special Programs at (800) 867-5941, or e-mail special.programs@esc.edu.
