Three Striking Sprint Locals Reach Agreements

CWA locals representing about 700 Sprint workers who went on strike Oct. 10 over management's extreme demands for health care and other givebacks have reached new agreements ending walkouts in those units.

Members of CWA Local 3672, Hickory, N.C.; Local 4700, Evansville, Ind.; and Local 3176, Ocala, Fla., have ratified agreements, reported Jimmy Gurganus, CWA vice president for Telecommunications. The settlements in each case were approved by a strong majority of unit members, he said. The ratification process is underway for members of Local 13000 in Butler, Pa.; that local did not strike Sprint.

The agreements reached so far are substantially better than Sprint's bargaining demands and the final offer made prior to the necessary strikes, Gurganus noted.

Gurganus said CWA hasn't yet reached a settlement covering 300 workers, members of Local 3871 in Bluff City, Tenn., but indicated that a final agreement could be reached soon.

The Florida, Hickory, N.C., and Indiana agreements provide for a wage increase of 7.5 percent over the contract term. They retain Sunday premium pay and preserve disability pay for long term disability, along with the opportunity to return to work after short term disability status ends.

As the CWA Newsletter went online, CWA and Sprint were working to finalize an agreement covering 1,200 members of Locals 3680, 3681, 3682 and 3685 in North Carolina.
