Solidarity Keeps VIS Strike Strong

Verizon Information Services strikers and supporters mobilized across New York State, buoyed by financial and solidarity support from CWA locals and members. The VIS unfair labor practice strike is entering its fourth week. Meanwhile, CWA is pressing charges of bad faith bargaining by VIS with the National Labor Relations Board.

In Buffalo, members of Local 1122 rallied and leafleted fans at Buffalo Bills stadium, encouraging them to sign letters to Verizon chief Ivan Seidenberg supporting a fair contract for VIS workers.

CWA District 1 Vice President Chris Shelton walked the line with Local 1122 strikers and also joined members of Local 1105 at a huge rally in Manhattan, with supporters including members from CWA Verizon locals and AFL-CIO central labor councils.

Despite the cold, strikers in Albany, members of Local 1118, and their children walked the picket line on Veterans' Day, making sure that management saw the Verizon's greed "affects members and their families too," said Local 1118 steward John Angley.

The Flying Squads are continuing their actions, and one VIS customer, a funeral home in the Local 1105 area, told the scab trying to sell him an ad that it was a Union shop and threw him out, reported CWA Representative Pat Telesco.

President George Alcott of Local 1301 presented a $30,0000 check to the strikers on behalf of New England VIS workers. Members of Local 1025 in New Jersey also have contributed generously to support their VIS brothers and sisters, Telesco said.
