SoCal Court Interpreters Call One-Day Action

Protesting court officials' refusal to bargain in good faith, southern California court interpreters represented by The Newspaper Guild-CWA held a one-day strike this week.

The action affected courthouses in counties including San Diego, Riverside, Orange and San Bernardino. Two weeks ago, northern California interpreters took similar action, and have already authorized a full strike if necessary.

A strike vote is underway in southern California, where about 150 interpreters and translators are represented by the TNG-CWA Local 39521. The protest was the interpreters' second this year. In January, they picketed area courthouses.

Unit President Silvia Barden said that the region's court negotiators haven't made any pay or benefit offers in response to Guild proposals put forth nine months ago.

"The way to avoid a strike is for the region to come to the table with real proposals," Barden told the North County Times in San Diego.

The court interpreters were organized following a change in state law in 2002 that required courts to classify interpreters as employees, rather than independent contractors.
