Scholarship Opportunities Abound for CWA Families

College-bound CWA members and their families are encouraged to apply for any of three different scholarship programs offered by the union.

The Joe Beirne Foundation's Board of Directors will award 30 partial college scholarships of up to $3,000 each for the 2005-2006 school year, and last year's winners will receive second-year scholarships for the same amount, contingent upon satisfactory academic achievement.

CWA members, their spouses, children and grandchildren, are eligible, as well as the dependents of retired, laid-off or deceased members. Applicants must be high school graduates or high school students who will graduate during the year they apply. Undergraduate and graduate students returning to school may also apply.

Applications must be made at the Foundation's website. They will be accepted until March 31, 2005. The winners will be chosen by lottery drawing. More information can be found at: ga.cwa-union.org/members/beirne.

Empire State Bahr Scholarships
Empire State College of the State University of New York is accepting applications for the Morton Bahr Distance Learning Scholarship program for the 2005-06 academic year.

Three new scholarships are available for the online study program named for CWA's president, who is an Empire State alumnus. The program is geared toward working adults and is open to union members, their family members and domestic partners. The deadline for applications is June 1, 2005 and award decisions will be announced at the end of July.

Scholarship awards fully cover tuition and fees and include an allowance for study materials and books. Students may pursue degrees in a wide field of subjects, and scholarship funding will continue as long as students satisfactorily complete at least one or two courses per semester (4 to 8 credits).

Since the program's inception in 2001, the Bahr scholarships have helped 19 people continue their education through distance learning.

The program honors Bahr's "farseeing vision and commitment to educational opportunity." Bahr has pushed for educational benefits in major CWA contracts and he was chair of the Commission for a Nation of Lifelong Learners under the Clinton administration.

For more information and an application go to www.esc.edu/bahr. To have an application mailed, candidates should e-mail special.programs@esc.edu or phone (800) 867-5941.

Barr Award
The David S. Barr Award, offered by The Newspaper Guild-CWA, is intended to recognize one high school and one college student for their journalistic achievement and to encourage young journalists to focus on issues of social justice. It is named after David S. Barr, who for a quarter of a century served as the Guild's general counsel, mentor, role model and institutional memory.

The high school winner receives a $500 award; the college student, $1,500.

All entries must be of work published or broadcast between Jan. 1, 2004 and Dec. 31, 2004 that helped to right a wrong, correct an injustice or promote justice and fairness.

The awards competition is open to all high school students, including those enrolled in vocational, technical or special education programs, and to all part-time or full-time college students, including those in community colleges and graduate programs.

No more than one entry per applicant is permitted. Included with the entry should be a brief summary of the work submitted. One original copy of the entry, as published or broadcast, must be submitted with four photocopies. A signed official application form must be attached to each copy of each entry.

A four-member panel, including a journalist, an academic, a labor lawyer and a member of the Barr Family will judge entries, which must be received by Jan. 31, 2005. Winners will be announced in February.
