Safety Comes First For Mobility Workers

CWA's Occupational Safety and Health Department is protecting you every day on the job.

This August, CWA and AT&T Mobility members, including David LeGrande (Co-Chair), Warren Hemple (CWA Local 1022), Kim Thompson (CWA Local 2204), Justin McBennett (CWA Local 4320), David Bennett (CWA Local 7250), and Joe Sison (CWA Local 9412), gathered for an Occupational Safety and Health Committee meeting. The purpose of this session was to address several critical workplace safety issues facing Unity@Mobility employees like:

  • Inclement Weather Response: A review of AT&T Mobility's policy/procedure for emergency weather events, including preparation procedures and trainings.

  • Workplace Violence and Robbery Protection: In light of recent robberies at retail stores in Texas and Illinois, Committee Co-Chair Scott Simmons highlighted ongoing measures taken to prevent future incidents. Steps include worker management training, alarm systems, surveillance, store opening procedures, and police presence during product launches.

  • Injury and Illness Data: Specific areas of concern like workplace ergonomics, occupational stress, as well as slips, trips, and falls on the job were discussed. Committee Co-Chair David LeGrande, a CWA member not affiliated with U@M, called out significant store redesigns, including the installation of improved workstations and chairs, that are helping address some of these safety and comfort issues.

Through surveys, health and safety trainings, and working to identify specific member needs, CWA's Occupational Safety and Health Department makes sure that members can concentrate on their jobs in a risk-free environment.

Committee members from CWA and AT&T Mobility will meet again in early 2015 to continue discussion of how we can keep our community safe on the job.
