Response to March 2013 Layoff

To all Legacy T Presidents,

We’re outraged at AT&T’s surplus announcement today of 339 Legacy T workers. It includes four office closings – two in Pittsburg, one in Birmingham and one in Augusta in addition to a big hit in St. Louis and the smaller numbers in other areas. Management gave no advance notice to the Locals so they could help prepare their membership.

While we are still above the watermark we negotiated in 2012, promises were made that discussions would take place, not only to save existing work, but to bring new work into the Legacy T unit. Instead, AT&T management counted the minutes until the no-layoff clause expired and hit us with this massive attack on our unit.

While the economy continues to stall, now more than ever we need to create more jobs instead of reducing them. We will make our voices heard at the next AT&T Shareholders meeting, we will also be pulling together our National Mobilization Committee to plan actions for the coming weeks. We will let AT&T and the public know that we will not sit idly by while they destroy our jobs and our communities.

In unity,
Ralph Maly
