Qwest Bargaining Continues July 12

Full negotiations are set to resume on July 12 between CWA and Qwest management, but the company has sent the wrong message with its latest demands, reported bargaining committee chair LeRoy Christensen.

Over the past two weeks, the CWA bargaining team has been analyzing information it requested from management and also has been reviewing the 37 comprehensive proposals received so far from Qwest. These proposals include a host of retrogressive bargaining demands, Christensen noted. The contract covering 25,000 CWA-represented workers expires Aug. 13.

In some 14 proposals, Qwest is demanding givebacks in health care, work hours and job conditions for current workers and wants to eliminate pension and retiree health coverage for new hires.

CWA bargainers had a quick response to management's explanation that it needed to save money: "We didn't make this mess, you did."

The bargaining team also expressed its appreciation for the many messages of solidarity and support it has been receiving from locals around the district, most recently from Locals 7019, Phoenix; 7102, Des Moines, and 7621, Idaho Falls and Pocatello, Idaho.
