Pass the Violence Against Women Act

Progressive groups are ramping up the pressure on House Republicans to pass an expanded version of the Violence Against Women Act in the lame-duck Congress.

Their new, powerful graphic TV ad – airing for a week on CNN, MSNBC, Bravo, Lifetime and HGTV – shows the face of a battered woman slowly healing, then un-healing, as the narrator describes how the House GOP voted to take away protections on her safety.

Right now, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is reportedly holding up the bill in his refusal to add stronger protections for Native American women.

In the early 1990s, AFA-CWA helped spearhead the implementation of the Violence Against Women Act. Today, members continue to that legacy of working to end abuse.

"We need to pass comprehensive, expansive reauthorization that expands protections to all victims of domestic violence; female, male, gay, bisexual, transgender, Native American and immigrants,” said AFA-CWA President Veda Shook this past summer. “Now is not the time to roll back current law and deny coverage to any victim.”
