District 1 locals marched in New York City's Labor Day parade, highlighting union busting at Verizon and AFA-CWA's mobilization at Northwest Airlines. Management at the bankrupt carrier imposed drastic pay and benefit cuts. On Sept. 15, AFA-CWA appealed a federal judge's ruling prior to Labor Day that prohibits Northwest flight attendants from exercising their right to strike under the Railway Labor Act. All summer, locals nationwide have conducted a membership education and mobilization campaign to stop Verizon from sending bargaining unit work to Verizon Business, a nonunion entity created following the Verizon-MCI merger.
