Organizing Roundup: Victories Elsewhere
- Local 1105 won card check recognition for Verizon Information Services in Lake Success, N.Y. The American Arbitration Association verified that 27 of 47 eligible workers signed cards, reported Ed Sabol, administrative assistant to District 1 Vice President Larry Mancino. Ricky Morrison, assistant to local President Keith Edwards, said the local had tried in the past to collect cards but could not get enough. Then workers attended a company dinner where VIS management praised them for being the only VIS location in the area that had not gone union. The next workday, management increased their production quotas. This time, the workers came to the local asking for help, Morrison said. Three members, Rich Campanaro, Gerry Matts and Ben DiMarco — VIS workers from offices already organized — helped convince their colleagues CWA was the way to go.
- NABET-CWA Local 54042 won a National Labor Relations Board election for 15 producers, assistant producers and assignment editors at Raycomm, reported Seth Rosen, administrative assistant to District 4 Vice President Jeff Rechenbach. The workers at the dual station, an affiliate of both CBS and UPN in Cleveland, voted 8-4 for representation June 26. Local President Bill Wachenschwanz led the campaign, with assistance from Matt Harris, NABET-CWA staff attorney. It was the fourth consecutive NLRB election the local has won in the past few years, including an earlier election for technicians, engineers and photographers at the station.
- Local 1034 won a Public Employment Relations Commission election 24-13 for Pennsauken Board of Education cafeteria workers. A lack of benefits for part-timers, job security and insufficient longevity pay drove the 12-week campaign. David Gross, a longtime employee who was active in the local’s organizing committee, said the cafeteria workers were the last unorganized group of employees in the school district. “The hardworking men and women in Pennsauken’s cafeterias deserve to earn a just wage with decent benefits,” Local 1034 President Carla Katz said. “We look forward to working with the board to ensure that a fair collective bargaining agreement is negotiated as quickly as possible.”
- Small units that chose CWA representation include: City of Lockport (N.Y.) Department Head Association, five members, Local 1117; and Century Telephone Security Systems installers, Lorain Ohio, four members, Local 4370.
