Organizing Roundup
Organizing victories elsewhere:
Editorial employees at the Chronicle-Herald in Halifax, Nova Scotia, voted 80-19 for CWA representation, reported TNG Canada Director Arnold Amber. Certification will follow the resolution of 16 disputed ballots. The unit is the first editorial department organized in the Maritime Provinces of Canada and will become the first Guild local in that part of North America.
Circulation employees at the Woonsocket (R.I.) Call voted 8-1 for Newspaper Guild representation, despite the fact that management fired 40 percent of the unit. "This is the first district manager unit we've organized in years," said CWA Vice President Linda Foley, TNG-CWA. She credited Sector Representative Leo Ducharme, Providence Guild Administrative Officer Tim Schick and TNG-CWA Local 182 President Scott Cole for work on the campaign.
Workers at Marcus Cable, headquartered in Gardendale, Ala., voted 47-27 to join the union, CWA Representative Dennis Dearing reported. The unit has a potential for 90 members. "It goes to show, persistence pays," said CWA Vice President Jimmy Smith, of District 3. It was Dearing's third campaign with the group.
CWA Vice President Jim Irvine, of communications and technologies, sent congratulations to Local 9415 and President Kathy Kinchius for organizing an AT&T unit in Hawaii in an NLRB election.
