Organizing Roundup
New Jersey ARC Floats on Union Tide
Direct care workers in group homes and day programs throughout Essex County will start bargaining for a first contract this month after a whirlwind organizing campaign with Local 1037. The unit of 210 technicians, counselors and program aides for the Association for Retarded Citizens voted 100-19 for CWA representation.
"The day I got my ballot was one of the happiest days of my life," technician Paula Goodman said. "That day I knew that by voting 'CWA, Yes,' I was voting for positive changes at my job. The time for respect is finally here."
The fact that the state of New Jersey gave ARC money for raises that workers never got helped spur the organizing campaign. Other issues were little or no break time, disparity of treatment and perceived racial discrimination.
Comcast Cable Workers Again Choose CWA
Comcast workers in Fresno, Calif. have again chosen CWA. Withstanding a second decertification attempt within 17 months, they voted 85-58 to stay with Local 9408.
"Now that we have won the vote for the second time, we want the company to deal with our union, begin to settle the grievances and get this behind us," said Louis Gusman, a technician from Visalia.
The 150-member Fresno unit was the first in California to choose CWA under the AT&T neutrality and consent agreement. More than 3,000 Comcast and AT&T Broadband workers have voted to join CWA in the last two years.
Park-Ohio Workers Seal Bond with Union
The bargaining unit at a plant making rubber seals and gaskets in Cleveland, Ohio, has doubled in size since December, when 28 of 29 workers signed cards seeking representation. Now the 60-member unit is expected to grow to 300.
IUE-CWA District 7 President Mike Bindas saw the possibilities when Control Transformer, a supplier to Delphi Automotive, recently bought Park-Ohio. In return for helping get Control Transformer's products placed in Cleveland, Bindas was able to negotiate an agreement for open access and card check recognition at Park-Ohio.
"We're very fortunate that Control Transformer chose to give the work to Park-Ohio and keep it in United States instead of sending it to Mexico or China," Bindas said. "We're looking forward to building a good relationship with the new company."
