Organizing Roundup
Victories Elsewhere:
- The Patriot Ledger Newsroom Associates voted 45-2 to affiliate their formerly independent union with The Newspaper Guild-CWA, reported Eric Geist, administrative assistant to TNG-CWA President Linda Foley. The affiliation of about 60 members grew out of cooperative mobilization efforts between TNG-CWA Local 31027 and two independent unions during negotiations at the Brockton (Mass.) Enterprise. The Patriot Ledger, in Quincy, Mass., is part of the Enterprise News Media Group. Staff Representative Leo Ducharme and Local 31032 President/TNG Vice President Lesley Phillips worked on the campaign with Locals 31027, 31032 and 31245. Sixty-three non-editorial workers at the paper joined TNG-CWA in August.
- About 20 employees of the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG) in Minneapolis achieved voluntary recognition, with the help of TNG-CWA Local 37002 local organizer Abram Isaacs, Geist reported.
- CWA Local 13000 won representation for the last unorganized group of Alltel workers in Pennsylvania, in Brookeville, on Dec. 28. The plant workers, by mail ballot, voted 31-1 for CWA. Local Organizer Dave Hoskowicz was assisted in the campaign by CWA Representative Dennis Carney. The workers have made several attempts to organize, Krueger said.
