Organizing Roundup
Chinese Daily News
After months of stalling by management at the Chinese Daily News in Los Angeles, workers voted March 19 to join the Northern California Media Guild, TNG-CWA Local 39521. The vote was 78-63.
Workers “courageously withstood a professional union buster, threats to shut down or reduce benefits and the usual veiled promises,” said Eric Geist, administrative assistant to TNG-CWA President Linda Foley.
The Guild now represents 150 workers in all departments at the Chinese language newspaper. CWA-represented translators and interpreters helped with the organizing campaign, Geist said.
Local 39521 Organizer Stephanie Moore and District 9 CWA Representative Mark Bixler worked on the campaign.
North Central Telecomm
About 150 workers at North Central Telecomm in Wisconsin won voluntary recognition for a new bargaining unit in CWA Local 4603.
The workers do contract work for major communications companies in Wisconsin and across the country. Local Organizer Joy Roberts said the workers met no resistance from the company’s owner.
Roberts worked on the campaign with CWA Representative Celia Cody, Local 4603 President George Walls and local Vice President Jim ‘Smokey’ Courchane. Contract negotiations are expected to start shortly.
Verizon
Technical employees at Verizon in central Virginia voted March 7 to join Local 2201. The new unit comprises 79 employees and 78 of them cast ballots, Local 2201 Organizer Laurie RaBorg said. The vote was 58-19, with one challenged ballot.
The technicians, who had been part of a non-union entity of GTE, began working with the local in November. The organizing campaign went smoothly, with a minimum of interference from the company, RaBorg said.
Contract negotiations are expected to start soon.
District 2 Organizing Coordinator Ron Collins said RaBorg led the campaign with help from Roger Wood and Jackie Scott, members of Local 2201’s organizing committee, and CWA Representative Richard Verlander.
In another victory at Verizon, Local 13000 won a rare run-off election Jan. 30 between CWA and IBEW Local 98. The election involved 25 GTE/Verizon technicians at a Verizon Select Services Inc. office in King of Prussia, Pa., Alex Minishak, District 13 organizing coordinator said.
Verizon had filed objections with the National Labor Relations Board and a subsequent appeal against the IBEW local after the first election, Oct. 10, 2000. The board upheld its regional director’s recommendation to hold the run-off.
CWA received 15 votes to IBEW’s seven. There were no void ballots. Local 13000 Organizer Harry Arnold led the effort, assisted by Minishak.
