Organizing Roundup

Victories elsewhere:
  • District 1. Forty-three employees at the Jewish Press in Brooklyn, N.Y., won voluntary recognition for wall-to-wall representation at the facility. They will be represented by CWA Printing Sector Local 6 (CWA 14156). Local President Art Deianni and Organizer Laura Kaplan assisted in the campaign. CWA Local 1168, Buffalo, N.Y., won certification for two small units in the Kalieda Health system, under a card check agreement the local negotiated in 1998: 16 employees at Small Wonders Day Care and nine Kaleida Alcohol Counselors will be represented. The local also won an election for about 15 employees of Small Wonders (South Lawn) Child Care Center by a vote of 8-4, reported District 1 Organizing Coordinator Jeff Lacher. Local 1077 won an election for four supervisory employees of the Irvington, N.J. Housing Authority, said local President Cathy Braxton.

  • District 3. Dan Jackson, president of Atlanta Mailers Union 34 (CWA Local 14322) assisted CWA Local 3511 President Kim Kennedy in organizing 12 employees at Nick Clark Printing in Jackson, Miss. The unit is close to completing bargaining of their first contract, reported Al Rudy, assistant to Printing Sector President Bill Boarman.

  • District 4. NABET-CWA Local 54042 won its third straight victory in Cleveland when technicians at PBS-affiliate WVIZ-TV voted 14-5 for representation. There are 20 technicians in the unit. Upset with a two-tier pay system and lack of contract enforcement, the technicians resolved to rid themselves of a company-controlled union. Management hired a union-busting consultant to undermine their campaign, but the technicians defiantly posted their names on a petition of support for CWA just before the election. Seth Rosen, administrative assistant to District 4 Vice President Jeff Rechenbach, credited Local 54042 President Bill Wachenschwanz, NABET-CWA Attorney Matt Harris and CWA Local 4340 Organizer Jim Cosgrove for supporting a strong inside organizing committee.

  • District 6. Benton Typograhical Union 906 (CWA Local 14403) won recognition at two commercial printers. The local will represent composing room, press room and bindery workers at Azusa Printing, in Mt. Vernon, Ill., and the production department at Deadeye Printing, in Benton, Ill. There are about six people in each unit. Sector Representative Linda Morris organized both units and is assisting them in negotiations for a first contract.

  • District 13.TNG-CWA Local 38216 won an election for workers in the advertising department of the Hazleton (Pa.) Standard-Speaker, where the local already represented newsroom employees, reported TNG-CWA International Representative Bruce Nelson. The vote was 12-7, with one challenged ballot.
