O'Melveny, Mitchell Tapped to Head Legal Department
CWA's Legal Department is now headed by Mary K. O'Melveny as general counsel and Peter Mitchell as managing general counsel.
O'Melveny, who succeeds Patrick Scanlon, worked at headquarters as special litigation counsel for many years and represented CWA in successful class-action suits involving pregnancy discrimination and the Family and Medical Leave Act. She has also served as general counsel to the Coalition of Labor Union Women and as counsel to Semel, Young and Norum, which represents CWA in District 1.
Prior to moving to Washington, D.C., O'Melveny was a partner in a New York City law firm that represented many unions, including CWA. She is a member of the governing council of the American Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Section, the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, and a former board member of the National Employment Lawyers Association.
Mitchell since 1997 has been general counsel for the International Union of Electronic Workers, which merged with CWA in 2000. He joined IUE in 1984 after working for the United Mine Workers of America for six years, followed by a short stint at the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review commission.
He graduated from the Catholic University Columbus School of Law in 1977. He earned his bachelor's degree from Hiram College in 1969.
