NLRB Hearing Resumes over Unfair Labor Practices at Chinese Daily News

Los Angeles, Calif. -- On Wednesday, Sept. 29, the Chinese Daily News will resume its defense of unfair labor practice complaints at a hearing to begin at 9 am in the offices of the National Labor Relations Board Region 21 located at 888 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles.

The proceedings are a continuation of a hearing begun on July 19 that encompasses 34 separate incidents or activities in which the CDN is alleged to have broken federal labor law.

Workers at the Chinese Daily News voted to unionize in March of 2001 but because of NLRB delays in processing company appeals to the election employees are still without official union representation.

Administrative Law Judge Clifford Anderson opened the two-week July hearing with an apology for the delay. "I'm also aware," said Anderson, "although I don't know the details, that you've had the bad fortune of having a decision which is not yet formally resolved by the Board for quite a long time. That is a matter that brings shame to my side of the agency because justice delayed is justice denied, and you have my apologies."

The ongoing hearings are separate from the representation case and involve incidents of alleged intimidation and reprisal against union supporters.

The continued hearing is scheduled for three days this week, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
